Crash test dummies. What a job. Sit in a car going full speed, slamming into solid walls. Sold barriers that keep them from getting to the destination. Of course, the wall is the destination for them. But it shouldn't be for you. Have you ever felt like a crash test dummy in your worship? Has your worship ever felt like you keep driving into a wall? Chances are you may have put a barrier between you and the Lord. And with that barrier, you won't get to your destination. The next few posts will be about barriers in worship.
Barrier #1: The Wrong Well.
In John 4:9-10 Jesus says to the Samaritan woman at the well, "If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water." The woman replied, "Sir, you have nothing to draw water with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us this well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his flocks and herds?"
The woman believes the well is adequate for her needs. She sees it as a great well, a great source of life. It's her place to go. It's her escape from the things of life. It's her safe place. I have those escapes too. So do you.
Do you have a favorite hobby? A favorite sport to watch? Do you like shopping? Do you spend lots of time with that certain someone? We all have things in our lives that we enjoy. There's nothing wrong with having those things. Those escapes. The problem comes when the escape becomes your well. The well which you find your comfort and fulfillment of needs. The fact is that no well will bring true comfort or true fulfillment. No well other than that of Jesus Christ.
We all worship something. Most of us worship many things. We look to these things, whether they be hobbies, sports, shopping, relationships or even charitable works to be our well. Our source of life which brings rest, relaxation and rejuvenation. God will use many "good" things to help you find that rest, but don't start there. Don't start with the wrong well. Eventually it will become a barrier to God. Start with the right well. Start with Jesus. He's the "living" well.
