Paul tells us in Colossians 3:17 that whatever we do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus. Whatever we do in life, including our service in the worship department, is done for Jesus. Our practice at home. Our ability to come promptly to rehearsal. Our knowledge of the music. Our attention to the meaning of the song. Our dedication to the team. And of course our love for him.
This passage does not say that we need to do everything perfectly. In fact, we can't. That's why we have Jesus! However, if we are playing, singing, turning knobs, etc in the name of Jesus, we certainly should like to do things well... with excellence. We "pursue" excellence. It doesn't mean that we are always there!
I encourage each of you to develop the skills and talents that God has provided you. He gave us those abilities to be caretakers of and to be of use to his purposes (Ephesians 2:10). Later on in Colossians 3, Paul expands his statement by saying that whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men (Colossians 3:23). We serve with those gifts he has given for him. So let's develop them for him.
Finally, in 1 Corinthians 10:31, Paul says whether you eat of drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. If it's for his glory, let's give it all we have... pursuing excellence. When we fall short, let's know the grace of Jesus Christ covers it all.
Let's continue pursuing excellence in his name and for his glory!
worship Him 24/7...
