Recently our church had it's annual senior high and junior winter retreat. Although I wasn't able to be there, I heard great things about it from leaders and from students. Among the great things that happened was the involvement of the junior high worship team leading worship during one of the sessions. I heard that they were a bit timid at first during practice. The senior high worship team was there at the practice to encourage them and a few senior high team members got up and helped to coach the junior highers. These senior high students have learned the value of Mentoring & Coaching.
That's our second worship department value.
As believers, we emulate Jesus. As we grow in our faith, we grow more like him. Jesus was a coach. A mentor. He had the twelve (Mark 3:14). He taught. He coached. He mentored them in life. The very meaning of the word disciple is a student or follower of a teacher. We all have heard that even a new believer can teach others about who Christ is... in fact it's the new believers who are often more passionate or "on fire" about doing so. That's true with our worship as well. I've seen many newer, inexperienced musicians coaching and teaching those who have just started, sharing that passion and fire that they have.
We can be more like Jesus. We can be mentors and coaches... teachers... to those around us, not only encouraging them towards Jesus but also in the ministry areas we participate in. Just like those senior high students mentioned above. I've seen this quite a bit in our department. Senior highs teaching peers and junior highs. Adults coaching youth and each other. This is how we grow as a department... understanding that what God has blessed us with in terms of skills and talents are to be shared, not just on stage, but with each other. Passed on for others to learn from.
Some of us may wonder, as some new believers do... Do I know enough to coach someone else? The answer is YES! Like I stated above, a new believer knows Jesus! They don't need anything else but who Jesus is and how he changed their life. You don't need anything but that which God's given you so far. And just like a new believer probably isn't going to go coaching a mature believer in Christ about Jesus, but rather a seeker, we do the same in our ministry! There is someone who plays what you play or sings like you, who is less experienced and needs help. You can help them! You can mentor and coach them! It's how we grow.
And for those of us who are much more experienced... how much more can we pass on? How much more can be shared so we can do as Jesus did? To multiply his gifts in us within others?
This is one of our department values. And it works. It's messy sometimes. It's hard sometimes. But its worth it. Helping others grow so they too can use what they have for Jesus is worth it.
