Star Wars is coming. I have my ticket ready. Thursday night. 10:15pm. Don't call me. Don't text me. I'll be busy. I've been waiting for this for nearly 3 years. Actually I've been waiting for this since 1983. After seeing Return of the Jedi, I wanted to know what happened to Luke and Han and Leia and Chewie and C-3PO and let's not forget who always saves the day... R2-D2.
This past Saturday night I had a mini Star Wars marathon with a bunch of great guys who are going to see Star Wars opening night with me. We're all looking forward to it. God is too. Okay... so he may not be looking forward to the movie per say. But he looks forward to our enjoyment of it.
Being a Christian doesn't mean life is going to be a joyride with sleigh bells. In fact, living openly as a Christian means persecution (Matthew 5:10-11). But God does desire for us to enjoy life when living for Him and for his glory. Jesus did! Jesus himself said he came eating and drinking, a way of saying... he's having a good time and enjoying life! (Matthew 11:19)
In 1 Timothy 6:17 Paul says that we should put our trust in God who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. God gave us things of the earth to enjoy! We can enjoy life. There's nothing wrong with enjoying a good movie or a good book or a good sport or a good dinner. If you question anything, question your focus. Do you enjoy something recreational to the point of obsession? Is God a part of it? Is he in it?
Someone asked me recently if I was excited that the new Star Wars movie was released in a few days. At that moment it wasn't near the front of my mind. My heart and mind were focused on my family and Christmas at that moment. Then it hit me... I was excited about Star Wars, but not as I would have expected. I really do want to see it. But it wasn't what was important to me. My family was. My God was. My Christmas was. And when thinking of opening night of Star Wars my greatest concern was seeing the 10 guys I invited along able to fellowship together. Not the movie itself.
Star Wars is coming. I will enjoy it. But the only reason why I'll be able to be free in enjoying it is because of what else is coming. Christmas is coming. Jesus is coming. It's because of his coming, because of his example in enjoying life, and because of his gift of eternal life that I can enjoy my own life. Enjoy a life that is abundant and full (John 10:10).
This Christmas. It's on all the trailers for Star Wars: The Force Awakens: This Christmas. Sure, go see Star Wars this Christmas. Go see it a couple times. I am sure to. Enjoy it.
Yet, let's remember that we have far more to be excited about this Christmas. Jesus Christ. Live in him and you can truly enjoy the movie... and more importantly the life he has given you.
