What is freedom? It's rather ironic that many people who don't believe in God or follow Him say that freedom is their "God-given" right. Do they even know why we have freedom? Do I?
My grandfather on my father's side was on a ship in the Pacific during World War II. At one point he lost his boat and ended up in the water. My grandfather on my mother's side was in a tank division in Europe during the Second Great War. His division was among those that liberated Dachau concentration camp. My father flew in B-52s over Vietnam and brought English to many South Vietnam soldiers. My brother served in the Afghanistan and Iraq campaigns with the Air Force and serves still as a reservist. He also serves as a police officer.
I grew up with a deep respect of the military and US military history. It is still today one of my favorite subjects. I am honored that so many have offered and even sacrificed their lives for the history of freedoms we enjoy in the United States. But let us not forget one very important piece of freedom's history.
Jesus Christ died on a cross to give us REAL freedom.
All other freedoms can be taken away. To those who follow Christ, only salvation through Him can never be denied. It can never be rescinded. It can never be taken.
Galatians 5:1 says that Christ set us free. He really set us free. Believers, live free. Make sure you stay free! Don't get tied up again in slavery to the law.
This Fourth of July weekend consider what Christ has set you free from. Consider also what are you still holding on to that he wants you to be set free from. He can set you free. Free indeed. Some believers are not free from self-imposed restrictions. Some believers are not free from cultural pressures and attitudes. What are you not free from yet?
My fellow pastor Todd Roberts reminds me not to stop there. Ask a second question... What did Christ set you free for? Real freedom is not for us to simply enjoy. It IS a privilege given by God and it is given to each of us for a reason.
Pastor Roberts will be speaking about this topic at Community Bible Church in Marietta, PA on Sunday, July 5th. If you are around, do not miss this message. By Monday you can listen to the message on the church website: cbcpa.org.
Live free.
