I like food. Maybe you do. Have you ever been in church Sunday morning thinking of lunch? The pastor is up front speaking about the power of the cross and your mind in on whether it will be sandwiches, burgers, or steak. I'm very often the guy up on the stage leading worship and admittedly, I have occasionally wondered about lunch!
It's amazing how our minds can wander. My mind can be like a dog learning to be trained seeing movement in the periphery and thinking "squirrel"! It's like a child who can't keep their attention focused. And I'm grateful that God loves little "children" like me, even if our minds wonder at times. Jesus said "whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it" (Mark 10:15).
All that said, I need to do my utmost to keep my attention on God in our worship time. We all do. Not only when we "worship" with others on a Sunday morning, but each and every day.
Psalm 111:1 says, "I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart." I want to be like that! I want to give him my whole heart, not just the parts I'm willing to give. I don't want to give him the leftovers. I don't want to give him a divided heart. I don't want to give him a half-heartened effort. I want to do my utmost to focus all my heart, all my mind, all my soul, and all my strength on God (Mark 12:30).
After all, is that not where the real feast is? The banquet table of the Lord is far bigger, far richer, far more plentiful than any "lunch" I'll experience on this earth. And I am a really big fan of Longhorn Steakhouse's Sirloin! I'm even a bigger fan of the meat and potatoes that my God can provide. I need to keep in ind that the food I work for here on the earth perishes, but the food that endures forever comes from God... Jesus Christ (John 6:27). I need to keep in mind that the drink that quenches thirst for all eternity comes from God... Jesus Christ (John 7:37).
I like food. Maybe you do. Perhaps when our minds wander to thinking about lunch, we can use it to God's advantage in us. Perhaps when you think of lunch in worship, you can turn that thought to a hunger and desire to feast upon God's Word. You can turn that thought to a hunger and desire for more of God in you life. You can turn that thought to a hunger and desire to love and serve your Savior... he who fills us in our hunger and thirst for righteousness (Matthew 5:6).
I like food. Maybe you do. Let's like God even more.
